My guess is the white one has to be thicker to alleviate the light leakage issue that was rumored/reported. Still sneaky of Apple to advertise it as the same thickness as the black one...

I'm going to assume it doesn't mean that you actually control the thing without touching it, rather it just makes the wheel disappear when you aren't holding it. That seems to be a more useful idea.

I mean, otherwise, it's a useless feature, except to prevent screen scratching.

Yeah, if you read the whole patent (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1902), you'll notice that it makes mention of "force sensors" underneath the display to tell if it is a "light" or "hard" touch. A finger being waved above an object doesn't have force to sense, and in looking at the more tablet-oriented part of the patent, you can see that a hand is clearly holding the object (http://images.appleinsider.com/patent-ipod-touch19.gif). The document also makes several references to the input devices appearing or disappearing based on the proximity of a finger.

It would seem that the main purpose of this is to make overlays like this possible:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/images/thumb/d/dd/1fullipodav.jpg/800px-1fullipodav.jpg

    This isn't a "none-touch" patent.

All we need now is an iPhone worthy of Sprint's network.

    4.3" screen

    NO buttons

    etc. . . . . you know . . . an EVO that runs iOS.

Or, the app makers that I've been bugging for years can just port to Android, then I and many other would be happy campers.

i think you meant buy one get one free numbers instead of sales. omg i fed the troll.

android is not a handset manufacturer. it just is a viral mobile platform supplier. it works for them for market share but low on maximum profitability. apple must be appreciated for what they are. Leaders. they did what everyone else was scared to do with smartphones (no stylus) and took the jump into a dead segment (tablets) and they went about it well and reaped the rewards. now johnny come lateley (goog) has come in with the "ours is almost as good but for FREE" and have roped in many marginally satisfied adopters. android's every success is a tribute to its forerunner and DADDY, apple, who still does it best and wont relinquish that fact ever because they Lead the entire industry in all things and they lead well. stop being so butthurt about it and raise your glass to the best. APPL!

The most factually accurate post in this entire thread.

If the Commodore has BluRay, I'm in.

In Boston, mostly everyone I know with an iPhone, including myself, uses a case. It's more surprising when you see someone NOT using a case.

I use a case so it doesn't get as damaged in my pocket, and in the event you drop the device, there may be some saving grace that it doesn't shatter the glass.

3 iPhones in brookline running naked.
Although we have a few bumpers and a variety of cases laying around

I had to turn off all location services, ect to squeek through the 8 hour day and plug it in after work at under 10%. Hope this update fixes the battery drain issue!

    Well said Snowy_River.

Very good point about tools. If two tools are suitable for a given job, then a "pro" will choose the lower cost tool. That is why the pro is in business.

I had forgotten that Word is bundled with MS Works, so of course it must by implication be a consumer application.

For what it's worth, I am just wrapping up a 2000+ page text/spreadsheet/template toolkit that includes 400+ pages of pdfs - all created using Pages. The longest pdf is around 90 pages, including a ToC.

Wow, amazing how emotional people always get whenever I make a statement that could sound slightly anti-iPod... I know you love your iPod and all (I am very fond of mine myself), but over the last few years Apple has been focusing a dispropotional amount of energy into their cute little gadget which has massively boosted their profits. For those of us that don't salivate over all things iPod, I think this is too bad.

    That is all.

I don't even *own* an iPod, but I still think you're off base and aren't seeing the big picture. Thank goodness the people that run Apple don't think like you. Apple is focusing on these gadgets (iPod, Airport/AirTunes, iTV, iPhone) that aren't even Mac-centric, because they are *immensely* adding to Apple's reputation for innovation, style, and ease-of-use. These are attributes that translate directly to marketing the Mac. The iPod halo effect has been slow in coming but it *is* real. And it's soon to be followed by the iTV and iPhone halo effect. I think Apple will continue to make gains in the home market with their MacBooks. And maybe the iTV will help the Mac Mini take off as a media center computer. iMacs and Mac/Book Pros are always going to be a tougher sell because of their higher cost. But it's Apple's success in the broader consumer market that is allowing it to also stay in the niche high-end computer market...

So you don't think it's a problem that a regular iPhone 4 case doesn't fit the white model. Ok.

No kidding! Why do people get so upset when someone criticizes Apple? It's not like their dad owns the company. That is a huge issue when it comes to cases obviously.

    Very Cool.

One way to elimate scratches :)

Maybe not just scratches, but fingerprints, too. If a new iPod has a screen that ends up taking up the whole front, this may be a good way to keep the front cleaner. Iirc it was one of the major complaints of a video device released by Olympus sometime back. The device had a touch screen.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. The show generates over $100 million a year for CBS.

So...if Charlie makes $3 million per episode and they make say 20 episodes per year, he should be taking home $60 million of that $100 million? Really? What does Jon Cryer get to take home, let alone the rest of the people who work on the show?

Also, just wanted to weigh in on the "big hands" thing - I'm a woman, born a woman, never any question about it, but my hands are as big as most men's, especially considering I'm only 5'4". So are you going to beat me up just in case I'm a man?

That's a point I was also meaning to make, If you start scrutinising every woman to try to tell their history you're going to make a lot of false-positives. I have a couple of very tall and broad female friends that have suffered from this despite not being trans.

People really need to stop making other people's gender their own business, stop making assumptions and give people the basic courtesy of respecting their gender.

Show me where Apple calls Pages a consumer app (http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/).

Oh come on at least give the guy something!

It is common knowledge that Apple markets two principle lines.

The consumer line which used to be prefaced by an "i". iWork, iLife, iBook, iPod, etc.

And the Pro line which used to be prefaced by power or Pro . Ex: PowerBook, PowerMac, Final Cut Pro. etc.

I am also sure that if you review the introduction of Pages at MacWorld it was intended to compete as a consumer product and not a replacement for Word by Steve Jobs. He is always very careful about how he phrases things so that he doesn't upset, MS or Adobe, when they come out with these apps.
